About The Valiant Mural

The inspiration for these murals was the pub’s history and close ties with the Grimsby fishing history.

The pub was named after the Ross Valiant, a famous fishing ship - I did some online research and found a photograph which I used as the basis for the main mural on the brick wall, and added the Dock Tower in the background.

I enjoy drawing and painting in a comic book style - vastly under appreciated, in my humble opinion - and used bright, primary colours for the sea, the clouds and the sky.

The three other murals on the large panels on the side of the building were based on two framed paintings in the pub and the pub sign, respectively - again, drawn and coloured in a comic book style.

All three have been slightly faded over time (I believe the paintings date back to the 1970s), so a large part of this process was using my imagination to fill in the blanks and make things look fresh and interesting.
